Welcome to One Perfect Day where I’ll be chatting with my favorite writers & friends from cities all over the world. They’ll share a glimpse of what a perfect day in their city would look like- including their favorite places to see, shop, wander and most importantly- where we should eat! Such great information to feed your wanderlust, or tuck away for future travels.

This month, I’m so happy to introduce you to Ishita Sood, from the fabulous Italy Travel Blog: Italophilia.

One Perfect Day | Mantova with Ishita Sood

Ishita is an Indian blogger who is very passionate about Italy and feels deeply connected to its language, culture, food, and history. She writes about her travels on her blog Italophilia and visits Italy every year.

My blog “Italophilia” started as a travel journal to share experiences of my first trip to Italy. But little did I know there were going to be so many more trips after that. I felt a deep connection to Italy and its culture and traveled there every year to find more of me and Italy.

There is so much to discover whether it’s a big city like Rome or a small town like Muggia. With my deep connection to Italy grew my thirst to learn the Italian language. My blog turns out to be a resource for anyone wanting to travel to Italy along with inspiration, tips, anecdotes, suggestions.

I have reviews on Italy specific books, personal experiences, and many picture stories. It feels great to be the “Go To” person for anything and everything Italian.

EAT & DRINK.

Italy is all about good food and every region has their specific cuisines and dishes.

In Mantova make a pit stop at the historic “Bar Caravatti” for a morning cappuccino or an espresso. Order a Torta della Rosa at the bar and enjoy the atmosphere of its wood-paneled interiors and 18th-century charming details.

For lunch, I’d say go for the local Osteria delle Quattro Tette‘s  Risotto alla Pilota which is Mantova’s signature dish, and very delicious too. This place opens at 12:30 p.m. and is full within 5 minutes. Be sure to be there on time.

Evening aperitivo should be enjoyed at Bar Sordello for a view of the stunning Duomo in the background.

Mantova’s Tortellini di Zucca is another famous dish which can be enjoyed at Trattoria la Stella.

Bar Caravatti | Via Broletto, 16

Osteria delle Quattro Tette | Vicolo Nazione, 4

Bar Sordello | Piazza Sordello, 9

Trattoria la Stella | Via della Libertà, 129

WANDER.

My favorite place to wander in Mantova definitely has to be the signature Piazza Sordello. Even though there are many beautiful vicoli in and around the town, the Piazza highlights the atmosphere of the area.

It is so full of life especially in the evening when the people come for a walk, couples hand in hand, children playing without a care in the world. It reminds you what we often miss… the smaller things in life.

I also love the Piazza Erbe during the evening with a view of the Rotunda di San Lorenzo.

SHOP.

The town of Mantova is full of amazing caffes and bakeries. Apart from the very famous crumbly Torta Sbrisolona (the verb Sbriciolare means to crumble) I would also shop for Torta Elvezia and Torta delle Rosa both delicious cakes, giving Sbrisolona a run for its money 😉

Mantova has excellent sausages too so if you want to cook in the evening it’s great to buy some fresh sausages.

There are also a lot of souvenir shops selling handmade items such as cushions, table clothes, crockery etc. in the city.

TIPS.

Mantova is surrounded by three artificial lakes and so when in a mood to be away from the crowd, catch a break at the Lago di Mezzo that gives a stunning view of the city. One can even take a boat ride around the area.

Another very interesting place to visit in the town is to see the 18th century old Teatro Bibiena. This was the place where Mozart had once visited and performed a concert in his early teens.
